How does listing affect me as the owner of a heritage property?
As the owner of a heritage property, you are a custodian of an important part of Pittwater's history. It does not mean however that you cannot make changes to property. Particularly with buildings, it is recognised that they evolve over time, reflecting changing architectural styles and the changing needs of the various occupiers. This evolution is also part of the heritage of the item.
However, what is important when proposing changes to an identified item of heritage is to ensure that any work does not affect the identified heritage significance of the item. Council officers can provide advice on what is significant about your property, and can also provide helpful advice from a specialist heritage architect.
The NSW Heritage Office has published a brochure "Heritage Listing: Benefits for Owners" which is a good summary of what it means to own a property which is heritage listed.
The NSW Heritage Office has a comprehensive list of heritage related publications, many of which are downloadable from its web site. These include technical advice for the maintenance of heritage buildings as well as lists of heritage suppliers and tradespersons.
Council also employs the services of a specialist heritage architect to provide advice on heritage matters. If you are planning alterations and additions to your heritage item, you are advised to contact Council's planners and discuss your plans at an early stage. If necessary, Council will seek advice from its heritage advisor and this can be provided to you to assist in the formulation of your development application.
If you have any questions in relation to your heritage listing, please contact Council's Strategic Planning team on 9970 1154 who will be pleased to assist.
