What does listing mean?
Most items in Pittwater are listed as items of Local Significance. If any works are proposed to these items, then the provisions of Division 8 of the LEP need to be complied with. These provisions essentially require that the heritage significance of the item be considered when Council is determining a development application.
In submitting a DA, the impact of the proposal on the identified heritage significance of the item needs to be addressed in a Statement of Heritage Impact. In some cases, where the item is particularly significant or where significant works are proposed, Council may require the submission of a Conservation Management Plan.
Some items are designated as being of State significance. Currently, only 5 items in Pittwater have this level of significance, including the Barrenjoey Lighthouse Group at Palm Beach and Currawong. In most cases, works to these items also require approval from the NSW Heritage Office.
