What's On?
1. Slam it!
An exciting new spoken word event for years 7-12 kids - write a poem, rap or monologue and perform it live on stage - great prizes!
Slam It! is a live performance poetry competition with judges chosen randomly from the audience.
We are challenging Northern Beaches high school wordsmiths and performers to write a two minute piece which they can speak, sing, scream, rap, howl, even whisper their own poems, stories, hip-hop, monologues – whatever they can do with words, live on stage. Poetry slams are raging across the globe. From its Chicago origins in 1985 to Australia today, slams have shaken up the literary world. .Miles Merrill, the founder of the National Slam in Australia, will be our MC for this event and we also have special spoken-word guest stars Morganics and Omar Musa, the winner of the National Slam 2008.
First prize is a feature spot in the National Youth Slam at the State Theatre in November, plus a week-long course of your choice with Australian Theatre for Young People. Spot prizes on the night.
Wordshops: For ideas on writing and performing your poem, Miles Merrill and Morganics will present Wordshops at the Manly Youth Centre in Kangaroo St, Manly, on Tuesday August 25th and Tuesday September 1st from 4.30pm-6.30pm, $25 for 20 students minimum.
