Coastal Environment Centre Receives Water Monitoring Award
Pittwater Council's Coastal Environment Centre received a major environmental award from Sydney Water at the Narrabeen Lagoon Community Festival on Sunday 26 October.
Councillor Jacqueline Townsend presented the award on behalf of Sydney Water to the Coastal Environment Centre (CEC) for their tireless work on the Streamwatch program.
'Streamwatch' is an initiative of Sydney Water and the Sydney Catchment Authority which investigates and takes action on water quality.
The CEC is one of three organisations across the Sydney region including the Blue Mountains, Illawarra and the Southern Highlands who received an environmental achievement award for their commitment to 'Streamwatch'.
Sydney Water's Managing Director Kerry Schott congratulated all the award recipients for their valuable contribution to water quality monitoring and environmental education.
"Most of the recipients are involved in water monitoring in their free time, which shows incredible commitment," said Dr Schott.
The Coastal Environment Centre is the northern beaches' premier environmental learning centre and is a point of contact for schools and members of the community with an interest in protecting the environment.
The Centre has been monitoring local waterways as part of the 'Streamwatch' program for over ten years.
Pittwater Council's Natural Environment and Education Manager, Mia Dalby-Ball said that Sharon Kinnison, the key facilitator of the 'Streamwatch' program and other CEC staff had demonstrated their passion and commitment to the environment by working closely with local schools for many years.
"They have raised community awareness to a new level of the importance of water quality and the health of the ecosystem," Ms Dalby-Ball added.
The Streamwatch program was started by Sydney Water in 1990 and now supports more than 250 school and community groups who monitor water quality at more than 600 sites.
