The Local Government Act 1993 provides the legislative powers for local councils to establish Alcohol Free Zones (AFZs) in NSW to promote the safe use of roads, footpaths and public car parks.

AFZs do not apply to parks and reserves. Council can control alcohol consumption in these areas with the erection of notices prohibiting the consumption and possession of alcohol through the establishment of Alcohol Prohibited Areas (APAs).

Pittwater Council is reviewing the current AFZs and APAs and invites comments from the Pittwater community during the public exhibition period of 30 days commencing Saturday 18 July - Monday 17 August 2009 regarding the proposed changes. It is proposed to retain and in some cases slightly modify the AFZs in each of the three main villages of Avalon, Mona Vale and Newport.

Copies of the document are available to view at Council's Customer Service offices at 1 Park Street Mona Vale and 59 Old Barrenjoey Road Avalon.
