Newport Mainstreet Project Stage 1

Work is complete on major traffic management works in Barrenjoey Road, Newport, as part of the Newport Mainstreet Project.

The Project was given the green light by Pittwater Council in November 2007, following eighteen months of consultation with business-owners and local residents. The upgrade focussed on improving traffic flow and pedestrian access and safety. Key areas of improvement are the inclusion of right turn lanes at The Boulevarde, Bardo Road and Coles Parade; the closure of the median island at Robertson Road; introducing a reduced speed limit through the retail centre of 50 kph; additional pedestrian crossings with signals, refuges and crossings; a landscaped central median strip and widened footpaths with improved links to existing walkways and Newport Beach.

With the landscape work expected to be completed this year, the upgraded retail area will be a major boost for the suburb through better pedestrian access to the shops and beach and traffic being funnelled more effectively through Newport.  The Project will revitalise the retail centre and encourage larger numbers of shoppers and visitors into Newport.
