Warriewood Valley District Park - Playground

Council’s Section 94 Plan and Landscape Masterplan and Design Guidelines for the Warriewood Valley urban release area, identified the need for a district level playground to cater for both the local community and visitors. The park is located between Sector 8 and Sector 9 with a hectare on both sides of Fern Creek. A central location within the release area was selected that was within easy walking distance to residents and connected by the cycleway/path network within the valley.

Warriewood Valley District Park Playground is a creative play space offering a range of play features in a high quality setting. It provides a range of exciting play experiences for all ages. Additional facilities such as picnic shelters and BBQ’s, open lawn areas adjoining the playground will cater to broad scale passive recreation and informal picnicking. The design encourages free flow between these spaces. Additional paths will encourage extensive use into the wider parklands and connection into surrounding cycleways and walkways.

The playground includes:

  • A central gathering area that allows social interaction for parents and children and allows views of the playground to supervise children;
  • Path circuits which create visual linkages and encourage movement between settings;
  • A range of ground materials including pavements, play surfaces, grass and planting create a visually rich setting that retains visitor interest over an extended period;
  • Large iconic pieces create visual cues, structure and scale to the playground;
  • Choice of contemporary play equipment provides a range of active challenges for infant, junior and senior children including climbing, sliding, balancing, jumping, swinging, spinning and digging. The large iconic pieces are supplemented with
    smaller items to greatly enhance their value;
  • Play elements allows individual or group participation and a range of social interaction opportunities. There is also a variety of settings and materials encouraging exploration, teamwork, expressive, interactive and imaginative play;
  • Colourful shade sails and extensive tree planting provides shade and visual amenity.
  • A high quality finish was sought through construction detailing and the selection of materials and proprietary items.

Construction is expected to begin around July 2012.
