Volunteers wanted for Midnight Basketball

Volunteers are being sought to support a sporting program for young people known as Midnight Basketball which Pittwater Council has voted to support for the next 12 months.

The program will commence in October this year at the Northern Beaches Indoor Sports Centre, North Narrabeen.

The Council has agreed to fund the program which involves free participation for 12-18 year olds in an 8-week night-time basketball competition run in conjunction with Youth Reach and Midnight Basketball Australia.

The program provides transport to and from the venue for participants, with a meal and other support services such as counselling.

Youth Reach CEO John Kelly said his organisation was delighted to be part of the program which offers young people a fun activity in a safe and healthy environment.

“To ensure that the program is a success, we are seeking support from the community and local businesses,“ Mr Kelly said.

“Volunteers can get involved in helping out with the basketball tournament as a team manager or scorer, or perhaps assisting with the catering or transport,” said Mr Kelly.

Midnight Basketball provides teenagers with a structured sporting activity between 7.30pm and midnight on a Friday and Saturday night has been funded for the next 12 months by Pittwater Council, with additional funding support from Youth Reach and Midnight Basketball Australia.

Registration details for young people to join the Midnight Basketball program will open later in September. Details will be made available shortly.

Pittwater Mayor Harvey Rose said the Council would be evaluating the success of the program after the first tournament. “I’d like to think that if things go well and we can get support from businesses and volunteers we can then continue it beyond next year,“ the Mayor said.
