A Book of Pittwater Poetry

The Pittwater Community Arts organisation is inviting contributions for a book of poetry dedicated to Pittwater to be published later this year.

According to Lorrie Morgan from Pittwater Community Arts, ‘the book will contain poems set in Pittwater or which encapsulate the poet’s personal experiences of the area’.

The book’s publication is timed to coincide with Pittwater’s 20th birthday, which the Council will celebrate during the birthday month of May.

The Pittwater Council area was officially proclaimed in May 1992, the first uniquely formed local government area in NSW for 100 years.

Ms Morgan said the book could include newly created pieces as well as past works.

“Poets of all ages, whether amateurs or professionals, are invited to submit poems,” she said.

“We also want to encourage young poets to be involved and there are competitions for both primary and high school students. Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries from both high schools and primary schools.”

Cash prizes will be awarded to schools and in addition the winning students from each category will be given a trophy and the winning poems published in the book. The schools competitions will close at 5pm on Wednesday 4 April with winners announced in May.

Ms Morgan said an independent panel would be engaged to judge the competition and assess the adult entries for inclusion in the book.

Mayor Harvey Rose said the Council was very supportive of the poetry book.

“To produce a book on the poetry of Pittwater is a marvellous initiative by Pittwater Community Arts,” he said.

“Pittwater has a very substantial and natural environment. Poetry is perhaps the most fitting form of expression to capture this for posterity.”
