General Tips and Information
Be a responsible pet owner
Keep your dog or cat inside at night from dusk to dawn - the time when nocturnal wildlife is most vulnerable. Don't let your animal roam at night. It is easy, and humane, to confine a cat. Indoor cats live at least 2-3 years longer than cats facing the hazards of the outside world.
- Install a fully enclosed cat run
- Provide sufficient food and shelter for your pets.
- Always walk your dog on a lead if walking through bushy areas. Dog scent and disturbance can drive wildlife from their safe havens
- Identify your pet with a collar, tag or microchip.
- De-sex your pet to prevent unwanted young.
Drive carefully
Across Australia more than 34,000 native animals are killed every day on our roads. Nocturnal wildlife are most active at night time or at dawn and dusk making them hard to see and vulnerable to dazzle from headlights.
- Take extra care where road signs indicate wildlife.
- Move road victims off the road. Native scavengers are vulnerable to traffic when feeding on animal carcasses left on the roads.
