What are the flood risks?

Flooding in Narrabeen Lagoon can occur after heavy rain in the catchment or from waves and king tides from the ocean during a severe ocean storm or a combination of both.
-
Flood waters could rise quite quickly and there may be little opportunity for warning or assistance before or during a flood. Depending on entrance conditions and ocean levels, flood waters could remain elevated for many hours.
What is Council doing?

The group is jointly managed by the two councils, alternately on an annual basis, to meet quarterly.

-
Being prepared for a flood is the best way to reduce the risks. The State Emergency Service (SES) is the lead response agency for floods, storms and tsunami across NSW. See the SES website for ways you can prepare for a flood.

Council will post information on the website and advertise in the local media whenever new information becomes available.

Narrabeen Lagoon Entrance Clearance Works
Entrance clearance is required to reduce the risk of flooding in the Narrabeen Lagoon catchment. Approximately 40,000 cubic metres of sand will be excavated from the entrance of the lagoon between September and December 2011. Excavated sand will be spread on Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach as part of ongoing beach replenishment operations. In cooperation with Pittwater Council, Warringah Council is undertaking the entrance clearance works. Cardno has been engaged as the Project Superintendent and the project is jointly funded by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, Warringah Council and Pittwater Council. For more information on the project please visit Warringah Council's website.
