Noogoora Burr
Environmental Weed
Botanical name: Xanthium pungens
Special note: Seeds are poisonous and the plant can cause contact dermatitis in animals and humans.

Description
An erect annual herb to 2.5m high. Levae are similar in shap to grape vine leaves and are dark green on the upper surface, approximately 15cm in diameter. Flowers develop into woody spiny burrs, 1.2 - 2cm long with numerous sharp spines. Seeds are poisonous and the plant can cause contact dermatitis in animals and humans.
Dispersal
Spread by seed in burrs. Burrs catch onto clothing and animals and are also dispersed by water. Infestations usually occur along catchments.
Impact on bushland
It out-competes native plants, creates a mono-culture and destroys habitat for local native animals.
Control
Manual: Hand-pulling is effective for plants before flowering or burr formation. Gloves should be worn to avoid contact with the plant.
Chemical: Please contact your local control authority for advice on chemical control and see the Noogoora Burr Factsheet below.
