Rabbit Control

How are Rabbits controlled?

An integrated approach using a variety of control methods is most effective way of controlling rabbit populations.
Methods include:

  • Trapping with cages
  • Fumigation and destruction of warrens
  • Fencing
  • Shooting
  • Baiting e.g with Pindone
  • Biological control e.g myxomatosis and rabbit cailivirus

What is Pittwater Council doing to control feral rabbits?

Pindone Baits
Pindone baits

Council carries out baiting with Pindone on public and private land. Most recently baiting has been carried out at:

  • Sydney Water Land near Council at Boondah Rd, Warriewood
  • Mona Vale Dunes (end of Golf Avenue, Mona Vale)

Pittwater Council recognises that rabbit baiting poses a risk to other animals (e.g bandicoots and possums) so care is taken to minimise impacts. This is achieved by:

  • Monitoring before, during and after the program
  • Removing baits after dusk
  • Locating bait stations under wire mesh canopies
