Rabbit Trapping Procedure


Set up

1. With the aid of a Bushland Management staff, select an appropriate, sheltered site for the trap to be located.

2. Bait the trap and surrounding area with a handful of Lucerne, fresh veggie scraps, garden herbs, etc.

3. For at least the first two nights FREE FEED to allow rabbits to become familiar with the trap.

Free Feeding: leave trap such that rabbits are able to enter and leave without tripping mechanism. Use a stick or wire in fixings on top of cage or from open door to ground. Spread feed in and around cage.


Trapping

Traps can be set at all times. However, if going away for more than 24 hours please do not set traps.

5. Check traps regularly and allow a safe release of any non-target animals. If an animal is harmed, contact either of the following:

6. Please keep a record of all species caught and the number, you may use the Rabbit Trapping Record Form. It is an offense under the National Parks and Wildlife Act to remove and/or relocate native animals to other sites.

7. The cage is not to be used to capture native animals and the resident must abide by the Cruelty to Animals Act 1979.

8. At the end of the program, the trap will need to be returned to the Boondah Depot where your bond will be refunded.
