Coastal Saltmarsh Rehabilitation Project
Funded by the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority
Environmental rehabilitation works are to continue in Careel Bay with $50,000 from the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority (HN CMA) for the Saltmarsh area and $25, 000 for weed removal in surrounding bushland.
Saltmarsh is a key component of the healthy Estuary system providing habitat and cycling nutrients. With over 70% of commercial fish spending some of their life in an Estuary the importance of Saltmarsh is clear. Saltmarsh is an Endangered Ecological Community as over 80% in the Sydney Region has been destroyed - mostly by filling.
The Careel Bay Saltmarsh is one of the only large Sarcocornia dominated Saltmarshes in the Hawkesbury Nepean Estuary. The grant will assist in remediation of damaged Saltmarsh and improve the management of the boundary between private properties and the Saltmarsh and on-going management of weeds in the Casuarina Forest adjoining the Saltmarsh.
Council will facilitate Community Walks and Talks lead by Saltmarsh and Bird Experts and community planting days.
