Fridge Buy Back Program
Pittwater Council is a participant in the NSW Government's "Fridge Buy Back Program", which commenced in September 2006. The program is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from working " second fridges "
Many homes have working second fridges plugged in which are often hard to justify in terms of operating costs or amount of use. Old fridges are big energy users, consuming up to three times the energy of new fridges, because when they were made the technology was not as efficient as it is now. Getting rid of that little used, old second fridge through the Fridge Buyback Program will reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by about 1 tonne per year. The refrigerant gases will be properly removed and the metals recycled.
Result for Phase I of the Progam: September 2006 - January 2007
In the first phase of the Fridge Buyback Program, Pittwater was ranked first out of 37 participating Sydney Councils with 126 of the first 1500 fridges collected coming from the Pittwater LGA. This result translates into an impressive 1,217 tonnes of CO2 abated.
Taking advantage of this Offer
The Fridge Buyback Program will be continuing for some months yet, so there is still time to take advantage of the offer. Fridge Buyback offers FREE in-home collection by experienced removalists and collects from the Pittwater area. If you have a working second fridge (e.g you have two fridges plugged in right now) that is at least 10 years old, 250 litres or larger and its removal would involve 20 stairs or less, you can participate in Fridge Buyback by calling 1800 708 401 or visiting www.fridgebuyback.com.au
