Best Practice Guideline 13 - Climate Change Adaptation
Introduction
The impacts of climate change pose a major threat to the environment of Pittwater. In addition, the likely changes to climate will also affect residents. The key method for dealing with impacts of climate change is adaptability i.e. being ready and able to adapt to the changes as they arise. This guideline provides some advice on ways to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for climate change for residential properties.
How you can prepare for climate change
- Design or modify your home to be adaptable and to take advantage of natural light, heat and ventilation for cooling for different seasons of the year
- Retro-fit your house with insulation, solar hot water and other energy saving devises
- Reduce your water consumption through the design of your garden, use of rainwater tanks and more.
- Good orientation of your house increases its energy efficiency making it more comfortable to live in and cheaper to run.
- Shading your home and outdoor spaces reduces the effects of summer temperatures, improves comfort and saves energy.
- Maximise native habitat onsite as it is more suitable to the Australian climate and requires less fertilisers, pesticides and watering. – refer to Best Practice Guideline 12
