Council Water Savings Actions

Council's operations and properties use on average 306 kilolitres of water per day. Through a Council-endorsed Water Savings Action Plan and participation in Sydney Water's Every Drops Counts Business Program, Council is pursuing potential opportunities to reduce Council's town water demand by an average of 20% or more.

Pittwater Council was one of many local councils that prepared a Water Savings Action Plan as part the State Government's Metropolitan Water Plan initiative. The Water Savings Action Plan also identified areas where Council has already been progressively implementing water savings measures including upgrades to water efficient amenities at the Lakeside Caravan Park and the Palm Beach Pavilion.

The Water Savings Action Plan was approved by the Department of Environment and Climate Change in October 2007 and adopted by Council in February 2008, with expected savings of over 47 million litres per year!.

Significant water savings have been achieved at council's parks, surf clubs, amenities, beach showers, golf courses and caravan park. Council has been eliminating major leaks, installing dual flush toilets, waterless urinals, efficient taps and showers, tanks to capture rainwater and groundwater for reuse and substituting fields with drought-resistant turf.  A new stormwater harvesting and treatment schemem installed at Porter Reserve in Newport has enabled fields to be irrigated with recycled water, reducing water use by 70% at that site.  At Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park in Narrabeen about 13 million litres per year will be saved as a number of solutions are put in place under a 2-stage project.

Council is pleased to be working in partnership with Sydney Water, Dept of Water & Energy, Water for Life program, surf clubs, sports clubs and Lakeside Holiday Park.
