Stormwater Management

Stormwater is managed within the Pittwater Local Government Area through a combination of stormwater quality and quantity planning controls and on-ground works and activities.

Stormwater Treatment

Council's Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices (SQIDs) captured a total of 93 tonnes of gross pollutants in 2005/2006. The main types of litter captured include about 45% organic matter (eg. leaves), 24% plastics/packaging, 23% sediments/soils, 7% paper/cigarette butts, and 1% metals (aluminium).

Stormwater Quantity Management

Stormwater quantity management involves implementing flood protection works and the strategic development of Floodplain Risk Management Plans and development controls. Major works have included multi-purpose detention basins at Avalon Golf Course and Narrabeen Creek, Warriewood.

Water Sensitive Urban Design

Water Sensitive Urban Design involves the sustainable use of water in the design of houses, commercial buildings, industrial sites, gardens, drainage systems and suburbs. Designs can incorporate devices to capture, clean and re-use water (eg. rainwater and stormwater) to reduce water wastage and run-off, and the use of water efficient devices.

Water Sensitive Urban Designs are increasingly being incorporated into the planning of projects within Pittwater. Warriewood Valley Land Release is an example where WSUD is incorporated into the project planning controls through the Warriewood Valley Water Management Specification.
