Impounding of Dinghies & Watercraft

Under the provisions of the Impounding Act, Council is by law authorised to remove vessel's  that are abandoned, derelict or illegally stored on the foreshore areas where they constitute a hazard, cause damage to the environment or a nuisance to foreshore areas that do not comply with the conditions of use for Council’s dinghy and watercraft storage. Council Officers routinely check the foreshore and impound boats illegally placed either on the foreshore or within the storage facilities. These boats are held at Council facility and if not claimed sold at auction.

Derelict, Abandoned or Illegally Stored Dinghies/Boats

Dinghies stored on the foreshore in an uncontrolled manner may be removed from reserves where there is a significant adverse recreational or environmental impact or where suitable storage facilities have been provided. Boats that have been abandoned, derelict or have been placed on a Council reserve illegally can removed and impounded by Council’s authorised Officers. These boats will be held at Council’s impound and will be disposed of in accordance with the Impounding Act 1993. Proof of ownership is required for release of any impounded boat. Payment of a release fee will be required upon collection of any impounded vessel. The release fee for 2015 - 2016 is $105.

Dinghies and Watercraft without a current permit sticker or that are over sized.

Dinghies and watercraft that do not display a current permit sticker in a clearly visible position or do not comply with the height restriction requirements may be impounded under the impounding Act 1993. To avoid having your dinghy impounded, ensure that the current sticker is on the dinghy, annual fees have been paid and if it does not meet with the height restrictions, remove the dinghy from the storage bay. If your sticker has been misplaced or damaged please contact Council to receive a replacement.

All enquiries in relation to impounds should be directed to Council's Commercial Property Officer for Dinghy & Watercraft storage on 99701111.
