Lost Dogs
- Call Pittwater Council on 9970 1111 and Pittwater Animal Hospital on 9913 7979.
- Dogs can travel great distances, so check with other Councils.
- Provide an accurate description of your dog, particularly if he or she is a crossbreed. Colour, gender, age, identifying marks, breed and microchip number
- Check that your pet's registration details are current and correct.
- Check garden sheds, garages, under the house etc and ask your neighbours to do the same
- Check surrounding streets, places that you may frequent with your dog, such as unleashed areas, friends & neighbours
- Check with veterinary clinics. Often, seized dogs will be taken to a veterinary clinic. Remember to check with the vets in and out of your area, not just your closest clinic. Your dog may have been picked up by someone living out of the area and taken to another vet.
- Refer to the lost & found column in your local papers and consider placing an advertisement.
Lost Cats
- Check your house, garage, garden shed, under house and ask your neighbours to do the same. Note: Cats that are injured or suffering tick paralysis lay low and will usually not call out to you so look and listen carefully!
- Ask neighbours in surrounding streets (Most cats have a territorial distance of several acres).
- Call all veterinarians (there are six in Pittwater) and provide them with an accurate description and your contact details.
- Check the "Lost & Found" columns in local papers and consider placing an advertisement yourself.
Found Dogs
Pittwater Council Rangers will collect stray and lost dogs found in Pittwater where possible between 8am and 5pm. Phone Pittwater Council on 9970 1111. Advise that you have found a dog, provide an accurate description and the location where the dog can be collected. Arrange for a Council Officer to collect the dog and provide your address and contact phone number.
If you are unable to contact Pittwater Council you may -
- Contact the Council pound - Pittwater Animal Hospital on 9913 7979
- Take the dog to your local veterinary clinic to check if the dog is microchipped so the owner can be contacted
- Call other veterinary clinics in the area to see if a dog has been reported as lost
Note: No collection service is available on Christmas Day.
If you have seized a dog:
- Contain the dog safely
- Provide water
- Check the dog for identification and contact details
- If you cannot reunite the animal with it's owner directly then you must arrange for the animal to be sheltered by your council.
- Deliver injured or sick animals to your nearest veterinary clinic
Found Cats
In most cases it is an offence to seize a cat and unless a cat is injured or is alleged to be abandoned or lost it should not be seized by any person other than an enforcement officer or other authorised person.
Injured cats where the owner can not be identified should be taken to the nearest veterinarian.
Buying a Dog
Owning a dog is a responsibility and a long-term commitment. Animal shelters are often full of dogs that have become uwanted pets. So before you go any further, it is important that you are sure you are ready to accept the responsibility of owning a dog.
Do you own a home with a fenced yard?
Can you afford to provide food and veterinary care (for maybe 15 years or more)?
Is it possible you may only be attracted to a puppy or will you continue to provide for a dog that may not remain cute and as playful?
Can you provide several hours per day training, entertaining and exercising your dog? Are you away for long periods of time?
Can you afford to provide food, desexing, vaccinations, registration and professional training and any other unforseen expenses?
Have you consulted with all members of your house-hold?
Buying a Cat
Owning a cat is a big responsibility and although most cats make great companions, are fairly independant, economical and easy to maintain, the decision to obtain a cat is an important one.
Spontaneous buying and irresponsible breeding contribute to the high numbers of animals euthanased each year. So plan carefully to ensure that you are ready to be a cat owner.
