Keeping of livestock
Pittwater was once one of the regions of farming in Sydney's metropolitan areas. How times have changed. There remains however a "local rural feel" to Pittwater with areas that house swine, horses, cattle, sheep and goats.
Pittwater Council is committed to keeping the community a safe and healthy environment and therefore there are certain standards that need to be maintained for the ownership of livestock. This is governed under the Local Government (General) Regulation 2005 Schedule 2 Part 5.
Horses and Cattle
- Horses and cattle must not be kept within 9 metres (or such greater distance as the Council may determine in a particular case) of a dwelling, school, shop, factory, workshop, church or other place of public worship, public hall or premises used for the manufacture, preparation or storage of food.
- The floors of stables must be paved with concrete or mineral asphalt or other equally impervious material, and must be properly graded to drain.
- Horse yards and cattle yards must be enclosed so as to prevent the escape of horses and cattle.
Keeping of Swine
Keeping swine in residential and many rural areas is governed by legislation and many conditions. Before considering keeping swine you are advised to contact Council.
Stray and Roaming Livestock
Stray and roaming livestock can be reported to the Customer Service Centre on 9970 1111.
