Common Parking Offences

Parking signsMotor Vehicles in New South Wales are regulated by the Australian Road Rules. This provides for the effective movement and free flow of traffic in the State of NSW. The Australian Road Rules provides a number of regulations for the parking of motor vehicles to assist with the safety of other road users, including pedestrians.

Parking within 3 meters of double separation lines
If the road has a continuous dividing line or a dividing strip, the driver must position the vehicle at least 3 metres from any dividing line or dividing strip.

Stopping in a No Stopping
Signs mean a driver must not stop on a length of road or in an area to which a No Stopping sign applies. Penalty Exceeds $185

Stopping on a Clearway
A driver must not stop on a length of road to which a clearway sign applies, unless it is the driver of a public bus or public minibus or taxi then they may stop on the length of road if the driver is dropping off, or picking up, passengers.  Penalty Exceeds $185

Stopping in a Loading Zone
(1) A driver must not stop in a loading zone unless the driver is driving:
(a) A public bus that is dropping off, or picking up, passengers; or
(b) A truck that is dropping off, or picking up, goods
(2) A driver who is permitted to stop in a loading zone must not stay continuously in the zone for longer than 30 minutes; or the indicated time on the loading zone.  Penalty Exceeds $132

Stopping in a Works Zone
A driver must not stop in a works zone unless the driver is driving a vehicle that is engaged in construction work in or near the zone.  Penalty Exceeds $132

Stopping on a Taxi Zone
A driver must not stop in a taxi zone, unless the driver is driving a taxi.  Penalty Exceeds $132

Stopping in a Bus Zone
A driver must not stop in a bus zone unless the driver is driving a public bus.  Penalty Exceeds $185

Stopping at or near a bus stop
A driver (except the driver of a public bus) must not stop at a bus stop, or on the road, within 20 metres before a sign on the road that indicates the bus stop, and 10 metres after the sign, unless the driver stops at a place on a length of road, or in an area, to which a parking control sign applies and the driver is permitted to stop at that place under the Australian Road Rules.  Penalty Exceeds $185

Stopping in a Mail Zone
A driver must not stop in a mail zone.  Penalty Exceeds $79

Stopping near an obstruction
A driver must not stop on a road near an obstruction on the road in a position that obstructs traffic on the road.  Penalty Exceeds $132

Stopping on a path, dividing strip or nature strip
A driver must not stop on a bicycle path, footpath, shared path or dividing strip, or a nature strip adjacent to a length of road in a built-up area, unless the driver stops at a place on a length of road, or in an area, to which a parking control sign applies and the driver is permitted to stop at that place under the Australian Road Rules.  Penalty Exceeds $79

Not parallel park in the opposite direction of travel
A vehicle must be parked close and parallel to the left in the direction of travel and not park at any angle unless specified by signage.  Penalty Exceeds $132
