Where to Recycle in Pittwater:

Did you know that the majority of items placed out for general clean up collection end up as landfill?  Metal items such as washing machines, dryers and dishwashers are to be placed in a separate pile to your general clean up items so they can be taken to Kimbriki Recycling and Waste Centre and recycled.

By making a few simple changes in the way that you dispose of unwanted items you can help look after our environment.

Below are contact details for organisations that you may be able to donate your unwanted items to:

Batteries

A battery recycling program is currently being run by Pittwater Council for recycling of household batteries, visit Council's Customer Service Centres at Mona Vale or Avalon to drop off your unwanted batteries.

Household batteries can also be taken to Battery World, 5 Mitchell Road Brookvale P:9939 2439 www.batteryworld.com.au.

Car and boat batteries can be taken to the Household Chemical CleanOut days www.cleanout.com.au.

Car batteries can be taken for disposal to Kimbriki Waste and Recycling Facility (limit of 3) or to Belrose Waste Management Centre (unlimited quantities).

Chemical Collection

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW runs free chemical CleanOut collection days at various sites throughout the year.

The collection accepts all household chemicals. For more information call The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water on 131 555 or visit CleanOut.

 Clothing

• Clothing bins are located in several areas in Pittwater.
• Local charity stores also collect your unwanted clothing.
• Another option is to contact your local Free Cycle  group to meet other Pittwater residents to whom you can give away and trade your unwanted items.

Computer Equipment and E-waste

The SHOROC Council's have banned E-waste going to landfill and therefore it is no longer collected in your General Cleanup. Residents can dispose of their E-waste for recycling at Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre. Kimbriki will accept up to five E-waste items free of charge from Pittwater residents (proof of residency must be shown). 

Items acceptable for E-waste recycling are:

• Computers and peripherals
• Scanners
• Modems and games consoles

Reverse Garbage Co-Operative is a not-for-profit co-op aimed at decreasing human impact on the environment while developing imagination and creativity. The Re-Use operations make available industrial and commercial discards, off-cuts and over runs to creative and practical people, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Call them on 02 9569 3132 and ask for the Operations Manager. Construction and Demolition Waste

Visit Planet Ark for information on minimising and recycling construction waste. Find out if there is a drop off location near you collecting construction and demolition waste.

Cork

Recycling cork extends the life of the product and reduces demand on cork plantations. 

• Corks can be taken to the Body Shop at Warringah Mall to be recycled.

Fridge Buy Back Program

The Fridge Buyback program, which collects and recycles working 2nd fridges, benefits both you and the environment! 

The fridges collected are professionally degassed and the metals are recycled. There are regular fridge collection runs every few weeks in most built-up areas. To participate in the program, your fridge must be a working second fridge that has been in regular use, is 250 litres or more in size and at least 10 years old. By participating in the program, you'll receive a $35 rebate if the fridge removal involves six stairs or less. The fridge is collected for free if there are between 7 or 20 steps but no rebate is available. A fee will apply only if the property has more than 20 steps.

Fridge Buyback is supported by the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund to collect 19,000 fridges over the next three years, reducing residential greenhouse gas emissions by over 152,000 tonnes and saving residents more than $29 million on their electricity bills.

House hold items in good working order can be delivered during business hours to the following charity shops:

Please contact the charity shop first to make sure they will accept the items.

Junk Mail

• If you want to stop receiving junk mail, put a NO JUNK MAIL sticker on your letterbox.

• To stop junk mail that is addressed to a household resident, register with the Australian Direct Marketing Organisation (ADMA) via their Do Not Mail register.

• If you still receive advertising mail you don’t want, contact the Distribution Standards Board on dsb@catalogue.asn.au.

Light Globes and Florescent Tubes

Take you light globes and florescent tubes to the next Chemical Cleanout in Pittwater to be recycled.

Mattresses

Pittwater Council encourages residents to recycle their mattresses instead of sending them to landfill via Council general cleanups and Kimbriki drop offs.

• Visit Dreamsafe Recycling Pty Ltd or call them on 1300 551 245 to have your mattress picked up from your house and recycled.
• Fees apply, approximately $25 per mattress and $25 per mattress base.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones contain metals such as copper, silver and gold which can be recovered if you choose to recycle your mobile phone.

Pittwater Council is currently running a mobile phone recycling collection program through Mobile Muster. Collection points are located at Council's Customer Service Centres in Mona Vale and Avalon, so do your bit for the environment and drop off your unwanted mobile phones, batteries, handsets or chargers. You can also recycling your mobile phones through Mobile Muster at these following locations:

• Telstra Shop - T28, Centro Warriewood, Jacksons Rd, Warriewood
• Vodaphone - Shop 57, Centro Warriewood, Jacksons Rd, Warriewood
• ANZ Bank - Avalon, Mona Vale and Newport
• Penninsula Communications - Shop22 Pittwater Place, 10 Park Street Mona Vale
• All Phones - Kiosk 6, Centro Warriewood, Jacksons Road, Warriewood

The Spastic Centre also collects mobile phones and recycles them through the Aussie Recycling Program.  They receive between $3 and $5 for every phone and have so far raised over $60,000.

Phone Books

• To stop receiving unwanted phone books (yellow and white) please visit Directory Select  to cancel you delivery.

Any unwanted phone books should be placed in your paper recycling bin.

Printer Cartridges

Through Planet Arks cartridges4planetark campaign, you can help reduce the estimated 34 printer cartridges that end up in Australia's landfill every minute.

Simply take your empty and unwanted ink jet cartridges, laser cartridges, toner bottles, fuser and drum units, print heads, waste hoppers/containers and fax rolls to any of these participating outlets:

• Australia Post - Newport, Mona Vale and Avalon

Plastic Bags

Planet Ark estimate that 20 million Australians use around 5 billion plastic bags each year.  These plastic bags can last for hundreds of years, so to assist in the amount of bags that end up in landfill take you plastic bags to any of these Pittwater drop off points:

• Woolworth's - Keenan St, Mona Vale and Warriewood Square Shopping Centre, Jacksons Rd, Warriewood
• Coles - Pittwater Place Shopping Centre, Mona Vale and Warriewood Square Shopping Centre, Jacksons Rd, Warriewood
• Food for Less - Old Barrenjoey Rd, Avalon

Pittwater Council runs  a plastic bag campaign every year where residents can receive a free calico shopping bag in exchange for 10 plastic shopping bags.  Keep an eye out in the Manly Daily for details of when we will next run this campaign.

Toys

• The Peninsula Senior Citizens Toy Repair group give your unwanted toys a new life by repairing them and donating them to local charities that care for children. Donate unwanted toys and children's bikes to the foyer of Avalon or Mona Vale Library. 
• Items can also be dropped off at Kimbriki Recycling Centre.
