Beaches and Headlands
Pittwater has some of the most beautiful beaches and headland areas in the Sydney Region. With its scenic coastline and crystal clear beaches the area extends for approximately 18 kilometres from Barrenjoey Headland in the north to Narrabeen Lakes entrance in the south. In fact, our coastline comprises 25% of the length of the Sydney metropolitan area's sea coast.
The NSW EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) has a Beachwatch Program that monitors water quality across all of Sydney's ocean beaches on a rolling six day sampling cycle and provides ongoing updates. In general, it is advisable not to swim for 3 days after heavy rain, due to pollution from stormwater discharge. Swimmers should also be alert to the possibility of rip currents at any ocean beach around the Australian coastline, and survey the surf zone for indications of rip cells prior to entering the water. Where beaches are patrolled, please swim between the flags.
