Governor Phillip Park
Overview
Governor Phillip Park is located on a sandy tombolo which links the mainland to Barrenjoey Headland. It was formed 6,000 to 8,000 years ago. It is thought that the tombolo has probably been breached by the sea during severe storms (which caused beach erosion) at least twice in the last 200 years.
Today, the park extends from Beach Road in the south to the dunes which form the southern body of the Barrenjoey Headland. Within the park, visitors will find plenty of BBQ spaces, open space, playground equipment and picnic areas. The area is suitable for social gatherings and all forms of passive recreation. Refreshments are available at the two cafés/restaurants that operate within the park and the surf club also provides a canteen service during the summer months.
Sailing, fishing, surfing and swimming are all very popular pursuits in this wonderful reserve. For the energetic, walks are available through the dunes up to the lighthouse at the top of Barrenjoey Headland.
